Montcas Testing March 4th - 15th

Hello Parents,

We will begin our Montcas testing next week at Arrowhead School in Third Grade.  Once we start a test, the child may not leave the room until the test is finished.  We will have a change in recess times and not have snack time offered on these days due to the paper tests that we will be using.  Please help your child have a well balanced breakfast at home.
We will be able to have sugar free gum in the room if a child would like to have some gum during testing.
Please remember to help your child get extra rest this weekend so they can do their best.
Due to our schedule changes, we will be moving
Library to 9:30 & P.E. to 10:30 both on Mondays for the testing weeks.
Our schedule will be as follows:

  1. Tuesday, March 5th from 8:30 to 10:30 Reading Section I
  2. Wednesday, March 6th from 8:30 to 10:30 Reading Section II
  3. Thursday, March 7th from 8:30 to 10:30 Reading Section III
  4. Tuesday, March 12th from 8:30 to 10:30 Math Section I
  5. Wednesday, March 13th from 8:30 to 10:30 Math Section II
  6. Thursday, March 14th from 8:30 to 10:30 Math Section III
Donations needed for the class:
  • packages of sharpened pencils (I bought 2 boxes of 24 pencils in January and the class has already used them up.  Sharpening during the test is too distracting)
  • packages of sugar free gum (We have about 3 packs leftover from Fall testing but we will go through those on day 1)
  • packages of lined paper for drafting ideas and math problems (we are down to our last package as a class)
Thank you so much for continuing to help your child be prepared as we approach this session of standardized testing.

Presentation Options

The children are getting very excited about their presentations we have been working on lately.  Some students are wanting to use color pictures they have found to share with the class while they present their research projects.

There is a way your child can share color pictures with the whole class.
If you have an email account, they could email the pictures to me at
faganm@billingsschools.org or if you use a "google drive"  or D2 account (an older student in your family may have one)  you could have them create the presentation and then "share" it with me by copying my email address into the share option address box and sending it to me.  This will allow me to open their pictures and project them onto the wall to share with the whole class.

Not all children feel comfortable using this method and it is not required for them to use Google documents until the upper grades in our school district.  However, if your child would like to save a few trees and a few dollars on ink cartridges, please encourage them to try this option.

Please email me if you have any troubles with the process.

It's Science Fair Time Again!!!

The Arrowhead Science Fair will be held Monday, March 18th in the gym. This is for all grades 1st through 5th.  Please let your teacher know if you will be bringing one by March 10th so we can plan to have enough tables.  All projects should be brought to school Monday morning, March 18th from 7:00-8:15 am. as there will be nowhere to put them prior to that time.
Following our fair, four days later, is the Billings Clinic Science Fair, which will be held March 22nd and 23rd in the MSU-B gym. This is for all grades, 1st through 12th.  If you’ve participated in the Arrowhead Fair, you can use that project in this fair!  They have many fabulous awards and prizes. We have had a terrific showing over the years with many winners from Arrowhead Elementary. They have a superb presenter who is bringing in a robot or two and speaking on “How to Train Your Robot.” Billings Clinic Science Fair booklets, with the application included, can be obtained online: http://www.billingsclinic.com/scienceexpo  Completed applications can be completed online or sent in to their office. The deadline for applications for the Billings Clinic Science Fair is Monday, February 22nd.   If you have any questions, please email or talk to Mrs. Auch.

Multiplication Timings

As we near the end of the 2nd quarter of school, it is time for us to work on memorizing our multiplication facts well enough to begin weekly timings.
During the next six weeks of school, I will be sending home a new letter in Tuesday Folders explaining the 6 facts that need to be studied that week and requesting 10 minutes a night to help your child practice these facts for the week.  We will add on 6 new facts the following week so your
child will need to save the "Week 1" facts and build their skills throughout this next quarter of school to include Weeks 1 through 6.

Week 1 Facts:
8x2=16, 3x3=9, 9x6=54, 2x7=14, 5x5=25, 8x4=32

Our timings will include the above facts mixed with all the 1's and all the 0's facts.
We will start daily timings on Tuesday, January 15 the first day of 3rd quarter.

Suggestions for helping your child practice are:
  • "Dry Erase" markers & a bathroom mirror (have mom or dad √ them before bed)
  • Index cards and Ziplock bag to make a personal set of flash cards (we have some at school we made that we practice with when they finish work early)
  • Ipad apps for multiplication
Thank you for dedicating time for your child to practice.  It will make a huge difference in their confidence with math!
